What is the difference between Taekwondo and Karate?
- TKD comes from Korea, Karate from Japan
- TKD is an Olympic Sport, Karate is not
- TKD is safer to practice than Karate because Karate has punches to the head
TKD does not practice this live - Karate allows grabbing and throwing, TKD does not allow this
- Karate allows kicks below the belt, TKD does not
- TKD Sparring (Olympic sparring fighting) is continuous sparring, non stop, until time limit is up. Karate sparring stops when a point is scorred, very unlike a real world fight
How many classes per week should I attend?
We recommend 3 classes per week with a minimum of 2, plus a certain amount of practice time in between classes as the perfect level of training. This allows the student time to work on material between classes and become proficient before new concepts are introduced. Unlimited classes are available at no extra cost.Will there be other beginners in my class?
Starting your training at World Class Taekwondo is easy! You will be taught separately from the main class with personalized instruction at your own pace. In addition, we will also assign you a "buddy" so you can quickly learn about the school from an experienced student. You will feel at home here in no time at all.Will your program make my child overly aggressive?
At World Class Taekwondo, children are taught that the martial arts are not to be used in aggression, but rather to defend oneself in problematic situations. Aggressive behavior is channeled into assertiveness to increase the child's self esteem, increase self discipline and build character. Our program also helps the shy child to develop self confidence and become more assertive.Will my classes be safe?
Absolutely. All classes taught at World Class Taekwondo are strictly monitored to ensure complete safety.What about sparring?
You will learn safely through a step-by-step systematic method of gradually learned sparring strategies. In addition, all students are required to wear a complete set of safety equipment. Consequently, the chance of injury is very small. We make sparring easy to learn and lots of fun.How long will it take me to become reasonably proficient?
The time it takes to become proficient varies with each individual depending on the effort they put forth. Our Students are very often amazed by their own ability and accomplishment in as little as six months. This training will give you the confidence of knowing that you can defend yourself in most situations. Your real goal, however, should be to attain the rank of Black Belt. This level of proficiency typically takes two to three years. Once again, however, this will vary depending on your level of effort and desire.Why do martial artists bow?
Bowing demonstrates sincerity and respect along with the deep appreciation of oneself and of others. It also teaches us to be humble while training to become strong and confident in both body and mind. Bowing is simply an Eastern form of greeting. It isequivalent to the Western handshake.
Why do martial artists yell?
Yelling has several purposes:- Develops physical and mental strength, while gathering energy.
- Breaks an opponents concentration, and is used to communicate with a partner in a group practice.
- Yell practice must be from the abdomen (dan jun), which we call "energy field."
